Walking Football

Promoting health, connection, and inclusion through sport

The Walking Football project supports the mental and physical wellbeing of boys and their fathers from both Romanian Roma and non-Roma Romanian families living in Peterborough. Through the joy of football, the project aims to strengthen family bonds, improve fitness, and encourage positive community relationships.

Delivered at a local community venue in Peterborough, the programme runs on alternate Saturdays, offering 20 bi-weekly sessions throughout the year. Each three-hour session is divided into two 90-minute segments:One for boys aged 8-14, One for their fathers.

Every session is led by a qualified football coach and supported by volunteers from the Roma and Romanian community. Around 12 participants are expected in each group, ensuring a supportive and friendly environment for everyone.

How It Helps

The project promotes practical, everyday gains for families and the wider community.

Better Physical Health

Regular, low-impact football builds stamina, coordination and healthy habits—no running required. Families leave energised and proud of their progress.

Stronger Father–Son Bonds

Shared challenges and small wins create quality time, better communication and memories that last long after the session ends.

Improved Mental Wellbeing

Friendly sessions reduce stress, lift mood and grow confidence through achievable goals, teamwork and plenty of encouragement.

A More Connected Community

Roma and non-Roma families play side by side, building understanding, respect and friendships that strengthen neighbourhoods.

Our first session set the tone: relaxed football, teamwork and lots of laughter. The players built confidence, got active and told us how happy they felt afterwards. Here are a few moments we captured.

We welcome community members, schools, and local organisations to get involved - whether by joining a session, volunteering, or partnering with us to expand the initiative.
